cough lasting less than 3 weeks (adult is 15 years or older)
what life threatening things can cause an acute cough?
CHF, PNA, asthma exacerbation, COPD exacerbation, PE
What are non-life threatening causes of acute cough?
URI (common cold)
lower respiratory tract infection like acute bronchitis
exacerbation of previous condition
environmental or occupational exposure
What is the criteria for subacute cough in adults?
cough lasting 3-8 weeks
what is the criteria for a chronic cough in adults?
cough lasting longer than 8 weeks?
what are the top 4 causes of chronic cough in adults?
upper airway cough syndrome asthma GERD non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis neuropathic cough
What is the mechanism of upper airway cough syndrome?
secretions from the nose/sinuses stimulate upper airway cough receptors
