What are the principles of the Mental Capacity Assessment
- Assume capacity till proven otherwise
- where possible, help people to make own decision
- unwise decision does not = lack of capacity
- decision made for someone must be in best interest
- decisions made for someone who lacks capacity should be the least restrictive of their basic rights and freedoms
How is mental capacity assessed?
1) Does the person have an impairment of their mind or brain, whether as a result of illness, or external factors such as alcohol or drug use?
2) Does the impairment mean the person is unable to make a specific decision when they need to?
If no
-Do they understand the info
-Can they retain the info
-can they weigh up the info as part of the process of making the decision
What are the short term management options for delirium / acute confusional state
1st - verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques
2nd - Haloperidol
IF THE PT HAS PARKINSONS OR LBD GIVE PO LOREZPAM NOT HALOPERIDOL
Give 5 features of delirium
Impairment of consciousness and attention
Global disturbance in cognition
Psychomotor disturbance
Disturbance of sleep wake cycle
Emotional disturbance
