Cortisol Flashcards
Secreted by
Adrenal zona fasciulata
Bound to
Corticosteroid-binding globulin (CBG)
Function
1) maintains BP (regulate alpha 1 on aterioles, more sensitive to NE and EPI)
2) reduce Bone formation
3) anti Inflammatory
4) Insulin resistance
5) Gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, proteolysis
6) inhibits fibroblasts (this causes striae)
“Cortisol is BBIIG”
Antiinflamm response by cortisol
1) inhibit production of leukotriene and prostagladins
2) inhibit leukocyte adhesion (neutrophilia)
3) blocks histamine release from mast cells
4) reduce eosinophils
5) blocks IL2 production
Regulation
CRH (hypothalamus) stimualates ACTH release (ant pit),
causing cortisol production in adrenal zona fasciculata.
Chronic stress indues prolonged secretion
Excess cortisol affects regulation by
Decreases CRH, ACTH, and cortisol secretion
