Correlation Flashcards
What is a positive correlation?
As one co-variable increases, so does the other
What is a negative correlation?
As one co-variable increases, the other decreases
What does no correlation mean?
There is no apparent relationship between the two co-variables
What is a research question?
A broad question about the concept being investigated. They must have a question mark
What are a research aim?
Identifying a more specific concept within the research question which the researcher wants to investigate.
What is a two-tailed correlational hypothesis?
When a significant relationship/correlation is identified, but no indication is given to the direction this relationship will take.
What is a one- tailed correlational hypothesis?
Indicated that the researcher expects that the result will go in a particular direction
What is primary data?
Data collected directly from the participant by the researcher
What is secondary data?
Data that has already been gathered by someone other than the researcher
What graph is normally used for correlational data?
Scatter graphs
What value would indicate a perfect positive correlation and a perfect negative correlation?
1 = positive
-1 = negative
What values indicate a strong correlation?
-1 to -0.5 or 0.5-1
What values indicate a weak correlation?
-0.5 to 0.5
What value indicates no correlation?
0.0
What are three advantages of correlational studies?
They can tell us something new about the strength and direction of the relationship between the variables
They are a useful technique when either practical or ethical reasons mean that variables cannot be manipulated
They are a good starting point for research
