Core Satre Flashcards

1
Q

Abandonment

A

There is no objective, universal moral law. We don’t have a God deciding what is right and
wrong

We humans don’t have a purpose. If there’s a God we have jobs to do (being holy etc.) and
an ultimate end to aim for (getting into heaven).

Without God our purpose disappears
There isn’t a universal truth. If there’s no God then there’s no ultimate justification that
makes things ‘true’

Not Aliens though, Aliens don’t exist LOL

Q

Existence precedes essence

A

Existence = living. I, you, we exist.
Precedes = comes before
Essence = what we are.

Humans are alive before we decide what we are

Q

Knife Analogy

A

Even before it has been made, we have decided what it’s for, what would make it a good knife etc. Its essence precedes its existence.

But that’s not true for Humans: there is no God. Nothing decided what we should be (even though your parents have wishes they
can’t define you).

Q

Condemned to be free

A

When you are choosing anything from which flavour ice-cream to have you feel free. In fact you feel powerfully free – you are aware of your
freedom at that moment. You ‘know’ that you could do otherwise.

Q

Anguish

A

Being free is scary. You could be anything (within limits).

When you start to grasp just how free you are, you realise what your life could become it’s
terrifying: there’s so much choice.

Q

Authenticity, Bad Faith

Counter Argument

A

Bad faith is the act of choosing for the wrong reasons. Ie; influenced by the outside world, we know doing drugs is bad yet we still do it ( not self deception making us feel that it is good)

Q

Hobsons Choice

Counter Argument

A

Example:
P: A boulder is rolling down at you
P: You jump out the way
C: You survive

In that moment it seemed like there was a lot of choices to make you could have done xy & z but you didn’t, you really were only left with the option of jumping out the way.
