Control of Movement 1 Flashcards
Which type of muscles do lateral pathways project to?
Distal muscles
Which type of muscles do medial pathways project to?
Proximal and axial muscles
Which area of the CNS controls the ventromedial pathways?
Brainstem
Which pathways are involved in voluntary movement controlled by the cerebral cortex?
Lateral pathways
Where is postural set generated?
Brainstem nuclei
What is the function of the vestibulocolic reflexes?
Keeps the head stable
What is the cervicocollic reflex?
Reflex activated by muscle spindles that causes contraction of stretched muscles resulting in stabilisation of the head
What is the cervicospinal reflex?
Mediates limb movement as a function of head on trunk position
Augments vestibulospinal tracts
What are the 2 parts of the reticulospinal pathway?
Pontine reticular nucleus - excitatory
Medullary reticular nucleus - inhibitory
What is the function of the reticular formation in posture?
Coordinates movement for maintenance of posture based on feed forward information i.e. voluntary movement
What is the role of the reticular formation in emotion?
Forms basis of body langue and physical expression of emotion
Where does the tectospinal pathway arise from?
Superior colliculus
What is the function of the tectospinal tract?
Coordinates eye movements to head and neck movements
Moves head to points of interest can be focussed on retina
Which side does the tectospinal tract project to?
Bilateral
Which side does the reticulospinal tract project to?
Bilateral and ipsilateral
