control of body temp Flashcards
What is core temperature?
Blood temperature
36-37.5 degrees in a Human
Why must body temperature be maintained?
To keep enzymes at an optimum temperature
Homeostasis
What can change body temperature?
Illness
Environment
Metabolism
Exercise
‘Fat’ around your body
Blood Loss
Vasodialation
Heat loss from the body because more blood flows to the surface of the skin ~ increased energy transfer
Why do we sweat when we get too hot?
As the sweat evaporates from the skin there is an increased energy transfer away from the body
Evaporation causes cooling
What responses do humans do when we get too hot?
Sweat
Vasodilate
Hairs on body lie flat
Lower Metabolism
What responses do humans do when we get too cold?
Raise metabolism
Sweat less
Hairs on body stand up
Vasoconstrict
Shiver
Vasoconstriction
When blood flows further away from the surface of the skin to decrease energy transfer to surroundings
Why do we shiver when we are cold?
Move muscle fibres = respiration = heat
Why do our body hairs stand up when we are cold?
To create an insulating layer trapping warm air
What causes shivering?
Skeletal muscles contract rapidly
(when we are cold)
