Over 35 smoking 15 cigarettes or more Migraine with aura Previous DVT/PE/Stroke/IHD Breast cancer Uncontrolled hypertension Recent major surgery/immobilisation Breast feeding and <6 weeks post partum
What types of cancer does COCP reduce risk of?
ovarian, endometrial, colorectal
What cancers does COCP increase risk of?
breast, cervical
What should occur if 1 COCP is missed?
take last pill soon, continue as normal
What should occur if 2 COCP are missed?
take last pill asap, continue as normal, use condoms for 7 days
If pills are missed in days 1-7, emergency contraception if unprotected sex beforehand
if pills missed in last week, omit pill free interval
Main side effect of POP?
irregular bleeding
If switching from COCP to POP, when is protection given?
immediately
When should POP be taken?
SAME time every day, no break
Missed pills with POP?
<3 hrs, continue as normal
>3 hrs, condoms for 48 hrs

How does nexplanon work?
prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus
What type of drugs may interfere with nexplanon?
antiepileptics, rifampicin
How does IUD work?
prevents fertilisation by decreased sperm motility and survival
How does IUS work?
prevents endometrial proliferation, causes mucous thickening
When is IUD effective?
immediately
When is IUS effective?
7 days
When should women under 50 stop contraception?
after 2 yrs of amenorrhea
When should women over 50 stop contraception?
after 1 year of amenorrhea
What type of contraceptives should be used in over 50s?
non hormonal or progesterone only
When is levonorgestrel effective till?
72 hours
When is ulipristal (ellaone) effective til?
120 hours
