What is pre eclampsia?
condition seen after 20 weeks
Pregnancy induced hypertension AND proteinuria
What does pre eclampsia predispose to?
IUGR, prematurity, eclampsia, haemorrhage, cardiac/multi organ failure
What other features may be involved in severe pre eclampsia?
headache, visual disturbance, papilloedema, hyperreflexia
What is HELLP?
haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count
Which women are at high risk and should therefore be taking aspirin?
hypertensive disease during a previous pregnancy
chronic kidney disease
autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus erythematosis or antiphospholipid syndrome
type 1 or type 2 diabetes
chronic hypertension.
If women have 2 or more moderate risk factors for hypertension, they should take aspirin. List these factors.

If a woman in a critical care setting who has severe hypertension or severe pre-eclampsia has or previously had an eclamptic fit, what should be given?
IV Magnesium sulphate
