hormone implants are two method of reversible birth control available
copper T 380A (paragard)
levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS or MIrena)
inserted into uterus to provide continuous pregnancy prevention.
contact HCP if string are not palpable or if they feel shorter or longer thant he previous months.
fertility returns after the device is removed
hormone implants
nonbiodegradable, flexible tubes or rods that are inserted subcutaneously into the upper inner arm.
contains progestin hormone and are effective to provide 3 years of conraception.
single-rod etonogestrel implants only one used in US
hormone injections
medroxyprogesterone (DMP) - is an injectable progestin available in an IM (deep IM)and subq form (anterior thigh or abdomen).
does not contain estrogen
prevents ovulation for 14 weeks
injection scheduled every 12 weeks
action and side effect are similar to those of other progestin contraceptives
backup used for the first 7 days unless the injection is given 5 days after menstrual period starts
Oral contraceptives (OCs)
available as combo OCs containing both estrogen and progesterone
comes in minipill that contains only progestin
both have much lower hormones levels than the original OCs, thus decreasing the risk for long-term side effects
adviced tp ise condom and spermicide if partner may be infected or relationship is not monogamous
estrogen increase risk for blood clot
Emergency contraception
morning after pill
method of preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.
used for contraceptive failure, such as a condom breaking during intercourse, rape or in situation when contraceptives were used incorrectly or not at all
