What are the main purposes of Contraception?

What factors need to be considered when choosing animal contraception ?

What is the process of surgical contraception for a Female animal?
Neutering
Ovaries and or the uterus are removed via abdominal surgery under anaesthetic
What is the process of surgical contraception for a male animal ?
Castration
Testes are surgically removed under anaesthetic
What are the other two methods of surgical contraception for Male animals ?
Banding - A band is placed around the base of the scrotum which causes the testes to drop off
Burdizzo pincher castration - a clamp is used to cut off the blood supply to the testicles
What is Hormonal Contraception?
A non permanent method of contraception which requires correctly timed repeated oral doses.
It can be in the form of an implant, injection or medication which can be added to feed.
It uses synthetic reproductive hormones to suppress ovulation or hormone antagonist drugs that block the action of reproductive hormones
What is a Contraceptive Vaccine?
A non permanent method which requires repeated injections.
Vaccines against sperm or egg proteins or against hormone receptors.
These are new methods known as immune contraception
What is Chemical Castration?
A permanent method of contraception where chemicals are injected into the testes to make them inactive.
