Content after Exam 5 Flashcards
ion-dipole force
when a ion (charged atom) is attracted to a certain side of a molecule with a dipole.
ex: chlorine (-1) is attracted to the positive side of a H2O molecule
dipole-dipole forces
when the positive side of a polar (has dipole) molecule is attracted to the negative side of another molecule
London dispersion forces
when electrons are forced to one side of a molecule/atom, creating a temporary dipole
boiling point
the point where a liquid starts turning to gas
polarizability
the ability to create a temporary dipole
all molecules have what force
London dispersion forces
hydrogen bonding
- a special type of dipole-dipole force
- when H is bonded to F, O, N, it creates a strong dipole
rank of intermolecular forces (strength)
- Ion - dipole
- hydrogen bond
- dipole - dipole
- London dispersion
