What is the consultative management style
one where the manager confers with employees before making decisions alone
Characteristics of the consultative management style
two way communication process with employees sharing their ideas with a manager willing to listen
managers believe that motivating employees will help achieve performance job objectives
usually offers job security, private social activities and offer fringe benefits to improve social relationships
advantages of the consultative management style
Greater variety of ideas, leading to better decision making
Employees have some ownership in the way in which the organisation is run and take more interest in it-may increase morale
decisions can be dicussed and fine tuned prior to implementation
disadvantages of the consultative management style
Time take to consult slows process
some issues don’t suit a consultation process
if the process is not consistent, staff will be uncertain of their roles
When there are more ideas, more will be ignored or overlooked in the final decision, leading to possible conflict and resentment
