constipation & irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Flashcards
Bulk forming laxatives
Wheat bran, psyllium husk, Ispaghula husk, semisynthetic cellulose – carboxy-methyl cellulose and
polycarbophils
Osmotic laxatives
Eg: Lactulose, sorbitol
Lubricant laxatives
Eg: Liquid paraffin
Surfactant laxatives:
Eg: Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (docusate sodium)
Osmotic purgatives
a) Saline purgatives such as Magnesium sulfate, magnesium hydroxide, sodium sulfate, sodium phosphate;
b) Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
Irritant purgatives
Anthraquinone group
Organic irritants
Oils
Anthraquinone group
Senna, cascara, aloe
Organic irritants
Phenolphthalein, bisacodyl, sodium picosulfate
Oils
Castor oil, it is hydrolysed in intestine by pancreatic lipase to ricinolic acid which increases the intestinal motility, but no longer a favoured purgative because of its unpalatability, frequent cramping, after-constipation, and risk for damaging intestinal mucosa.
