What is the presentation of allergic?
- Itching
- pink/red eyes
- Watery/stringy discharge
What is the management of allergic conjunctivitis?
*Conservative:
>allergen avoidance
>cold compress
*Medical:
>Antihistamine drops: azelastine
What is the presentation of gonococcal bacterial conjunctivitis?
- mucopurulent discharge
- Corneal involvement -eye pain
- Acute onset
What is the presentation of chlamydial conjunctivitis?
- Newborns with a red eye
- Red eye
- Watery discharge
- Palpable pre-auricular node
Presentation of viral conjunctivitis?
*Highly contagious
*Prodrome of cold/flu symptoms
*Associated with:
>Chemosis (oedema of conjunctiva)
>Lid oedema
>Palpale pre-auricular lymph node
What is the investigation of bacterial conjunctivitis?
Investigation:
>Gram stain conjuctival swab to confirm diplococci present if gonoccoal
What is the management of bacterial conjunctivits?
- Oral and topical penicillin
* Subacute/chronic can give chloramphenicol
How is chlamydial conjunctivitis diagnosed?
NAAT swab
How is chlamydial conjunctivitis treated?
Topical erythromycin twice a day
How is viral conjunctivitis diagnosed?
- Clinical diagnosis
* Or PCR swab looking for adenovirus, HSV or poxvirus
Commonest cause of viral conjunctivitis?
Adenovirus
What is the management of viral conjunctivitis?
- Lubricants
- Cold compress
- Topical steroids if cornea involved
