What was the Missouri Compromise and what was its main goal?

A

The Missouri Compromise was when Maine and Missouri were entering the country. At the time, there were twenty-two states in the U.S. Eleven of them permitted slaves and the other eleven did not. To keep things fair, Maine would enter as a free state and Missouri a slave state. The goal of this was to “ maintain the balance of power”.

What was included in the Compromise of 1850?

A

The Compromise of 1850 included four parts- California was entered as a free state, slave trade was banned in Washington D.C., a new Fugitive Slave act required all citizens to help return runaway slaves, and it was determined that popular sovereignty would be used to decide on the issue of slavery in the newly organized New Mexico and Utah territories.

What did the act do? What was the result?- It was written by Stephen Douglas and Andrew Butler. It created the Kansas and Nebraska territory and determined that popular sovereignty would be used to vote on the issue of slavery in the new territories. It was responsible for a time peroid in Kansas known as “Bleeding Kansas”.

How did this novel further divide the North and South?- Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book, and it further divided the North and the South because this book talked about how nasty and evil slavery was, and many more Americans wanting to reform. The South got upset and said it was just a bunch of abolitionist propaganda.
