Civil War hero Ulysses S. Grant became President in 1868. He served for 2 terms, but problems arose during his time in office. Name two problems that occurred while Grant was in office.
There was scandal and corruption, and in addition, a severe economic depression began during his second term.

How does the election of 1876 lead to the end of Reconstruction?
Hayes agrees to end Reconstruction in exchange for 20 electoral votes from 3 southern states.
What were poll taxes?
A fee required for voting.
What were literacy tests?
It required potential voters to explain difficult parts of the state constitutions or the federal Constitution. Test to see if you can read and write.
What was the purpose of grandfather clauses?
To make sure the whites could vote and the fee and tests didn’t stop them
Define segregation.
The separation of races.
What were Jim Crow laws? Provide an example.
They were laws that required African Americans and whites to be separated in almost every public place. There was a law that required separate sections on trains for African Americans and whites.
What was decided in the Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson?
The Court ruled that segregation was legal as long as African Americans had access to public places to those equal of whites.
What was a lynching?
It was when angry mobs killed people by hanging them.
