Who was Chief Joseph?
Leader of the Nez Perce tribe who tried to lead his people to Canada to escape being placed on a reservation.
Who was Buffalo Bill Cody?
He was an entertainer who told stories about the west to those who had never seen it, the tales mostly myth.
Who was Crazy Horse?
An Indian Chief that was part of the Battle of Little Bighorn
Who was Sitting Bull?
A Medicine Man that was part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. He was later shot and killed by police that feared the Ghost Dance would lead to a revolt. Killed before Wounded Knee.
Who was George Armstrong Custer?
U.S. General during the Civil War that was demoted to colonel when the war ended. He led the U.S. 7th Cavalry during the Indian Wars.
Who was John Chivington?
a Methodist Pastor and U.S. Colonel. He led the Sand Creek Massacre.
Who was Black Kettle?
He was the Indian Chief of Cheyenne whose followers were killed at Sand Creek.
Why did the U.S. government break treaties they had signed with Native Americans?
They broke the treaties because they had discovered gold on the land that they had recently given the Native Americans.
What happened at Little Bighorn in 1876?
Custer and the 7th Cavalry were defeated by the Lakota and Cheyenne who were trying to keep their land.
How was the performance of the Ghost Dance related to what happened at Wounded Knee?
The US was trying to stop the Ghost Dance.
What was the Dawes Act?
It was an attempt to assimilate Indians into American culture. This divided up the reservations into family farms. It hoped to make Indians into American farmers.
What was the Sand Creek Massacre?
It occurred when US citizens sought land in Colorado that was occupied by the Cheyenne. Mainly women and children were killed.
