compressive neuropathies Flashcards
carpal tunnel syndrome risk factors
- idiopathic
- rheumatoid
- fractures (especially Colles)
- fluid retention
what is the carpal tunnel
space between the wrist bones and flexor retinaculum that permits the passage of tendons and the median nerve into the hand
carpal tunnel contents
- flexor pollicis longus
- flexor digitorum superficialis (x4)
- flexor digitorum profundus (x4)
- median nerve
carpal tunnel syndrome cause
compression of the median nerve within the tunnel
carpal tunnel syndrome presentation
- clumsiness, pain in hand, weakness in hand
- numbness (worse at night) and tingling in median nerve distribution (affecting thumb and lateral 2.5 fingers, but not the palmar surfaces)
carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis
- thenar muscle wasting
- positive Tinel’s and Phalen’s tests
carpal tunnel syndrome management
- NSAIDs
- night time splint
- steroid injections
- decompression via division of transverse carpal ligament
cubital tunnel syndrome risk factors
- trauma
- osteoarthritis
- rheumatoid arthritis
what is the cubital tunnel
space between the medial epicondyle of the humerus and the tendon of flexor carpi ulnaris
cubital tunnel syndrome cause
compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes through the tunnel
cubital tunnel syndrome presentation
- clumsiness
- forearm/hand pain
- numbness and tingling in ulnar nerve distribution
- distortion of hand (ulnar claw)
cubital tunnel syndrome diagnosis
- hypothenar muscle wasting
- positive Tinel’s and Froment’s tests
- nerve conduction studies
cubital tunnel syndrome management
- NSAIDs
- surgical release of inter-muscular septae
