Composition Of Parenteral Fluids Flashcards
What is the difference between colloids and crystalloid s
Colloids
*molecular weight >8000
*high oncotic pressure
Crystalloids
*molecular weight of <8000
*low oncotic pressure
What is isotonic fluid
Cell has the same concentration on the inside and outside
What are different types of isotonic fluid
- 0.9% NS
- 5% dextrose in water (D5W)
- 5% dextrose in 0.225% saline (D5 1/4NS)
- LR
What is isotonic fluid used for
- To increase the Extracellular fluid volume due to blood loss, surgery, dehydration
What is hypotonic fluid
Less Extracellular solute leads to shifting water into the cells, the cells will swell
What are the different types of hypotonic fluids
- 45% NS (1/2 NS)
- 0.225% NS (1/4 NS)
- 0.33% NS (1/3 NS)
When is hypotonic fluid used?
- When the cell is dehydrated and fluids need to be put back intracellular
What is hypertonic fluid
The cell has an excessive amount of Extracellular solute, water is rushing out of the cell to the Extracellular area and shrinks
*hyper people are skinny
What are the different types of hypertonic fluids
- 3% saline
- 5% saline
- 10% dextrose in water (D10W)
- 5% dextrose in 0.9% saline (D5NS), 5% dextrose in 0.45% saline (D5 1/2NS), 5% dextrose in LR
