Components of Biodiversity 3.7 Flashcards
The three measurable components for biodiversity are:
Genetic diversity
Species diversity
Ecosystem diversity
What is genetic diversity?
The number and frequency of all the alleles of genes possessed by population
What does genetic diversity give species the ability to do?
To adapt to changing conditions
If one population of a species dies out what might happen?
The species may have lost some of it’s genetic diversity and this may limit its ability to adapt to changing conditions.
What is species diversity?
Species diversity comprises the number of different species in an ecosystem (the species richness) and the proportion of each species in the ecosystem (the relative abundance)
What is ecosystems diversity?
This refers to the number of distinct ecosystems within a defined area
How is ecosystems diversity studied?
By looking at biogeography - the study of the distribution of species and ecosystems.
