What is animal welfare?
The physical and mental wellbeing of animals.
What are the five freedoms of animal welfare?
Freedom from:
- Hunger and Thirst
- Discomfort
- Pain, injury and disease
- To behave normally
- Fear and distress
What is intensive farming?
Costs are low which generates higher profits however is less ethical than free range due to poorer animal welfare.
What is free range farming?
More land, finances and labor intensive. but people are willing to pay a higher price for food given the better quality of life for the animals.
Animals grow healthier and so produce better quality products.
What are the four indicators of poor welfare?
Stereotypy
Misdirected Behavior
Failure in sexual or parental behavior
Altered levels of activity
What is Stereotypy?
A behavioral pattern that takes the form of a repetitive movement that lacks variation.
Pacing, Oral (licking) and other (rocking etc)
How can stereotypy be reduced?
Enrich the environment
What is misdirected behavior?
The behavior will be normal but displayed in an innapropriate/diffferent situation.
E.g. excessive plucking of feathers
What are the altered levels of activity?
High activity - Hysteria or Hyper-aggression
Low activity - Apathy or excessive sleeping
