Pain threshold: point when person is aware of pain
Low pain threshold like needle where as high pain threshold does not
Feel needle
Pain tolerance: highest level of discomfort person willing to experience
Lower pain tolerance feels discomfort quickly
High pain tolerance takes long time to feel discomfort

Family and culture
Previous pain experience
Emotional state
Reporting pain
Location
Characteristics of pain
Nerve-burning or tingling
Arthritis-dull or achy
Intensity of pain. Scale 1-10, 1 =no pain
Word descriptions Dull. Sharp piercing stabbing. Shooting Nagging Throbbing pulsating or pounding Burning pins and needles sensation Gnawing Spasm Cramps Squeezing crushing feel pressure Radiating or spreading
Two kinds of pain
Acute pain. Occurs suddenly to injury or surgery
Chronic pain lasts beyond 6 months.can be constant or intermittent
Ranges in intensity from mild to severe
