a couple girls start showing “strange behavior” like screaming, mysterious spells, they call a doctor and says there is nothing wrong physically but they are being controlled by the devil, prayer services are held, John indian makes a witch cake so it will help discover the witch - made of rye meal and the girls urine, girls give up 3 names - sarah good, sarah osborne, and tituba, tituba confesses and says she saw the devil walk through the town, accusations keep forming over and over, members of the court quit, by october the governor says “okay we’re done” the trial is not going to be in salem but in boston insead, 0 are tried in boston
what is the difference between the salem village and the salem town?

basis for all society, government, male dominated, women began to play important roles and men can’t deal with it
power of religion
no different between political and religious, women take power? -more power in church, quaker teachings, church as social center - state and government will ruin the church, founds rhode island on religous freedom
King Philip’s war
chief metacom - the british refer to him as king philip, wampanoags - they feel like the british are invading their land so they fight back, fear- the british cut off metacom’s head and put it on a spike to remind the native americans what happens if you fight back
economic and political
population growth, towns vs villages, political instability, ergot - the mold on bread if you get ergot poisoning you hallucinate - salem trials???
Glorious revolution
king james II is catholic - oh god, then he has a son, the community goes to find a new king to take over the crown, james gets kicked out and william and mary take their place
