what was roanoke island
in north carolina (outer banks), first attempt at permanent settlement, first british birth in america, the “last colony”
who were privateers
state sponsored pirates, raleigh and his men are going to conquer these ships - spanish and the queen ordered him to do this

the governor of roanoke island, idea! ill go to england and get stuff, can’t find a way home because britain and spanish are fighting, 3 years later he gets there and there is absolutley nothing except “Croatoan” (local native american tribe) engraved on a tree
What was jamestown
established may 14th, 1607, first permanent english settlement, john smith and pocahontas, tobacco, when the settlers get there there is a massive drought, only way to get food is from england - takes months, go through a time of starvation, british abandoned jamestown, only reason they survive is because they found their supply ship
Plymouth and Massachussets
Pilgrims vs Puritans, 1620, mayflower and mayflower compact, massachusetts bay colony, they struggle and the wampanoag tribe helps - yay thanksgiving!

sepratist from the church of england and want to worship their own religion, follow calvinism (gods will, god already chose who was gonna be saved - if you are worried you are saved
puritans
don’t want to leave the church of england but they want to reform it
covenant theology
pact with god, he will protect you, you must honor him, if you work for satan you are either redeemed or executed
mayflower compact
set up by pilgrims, we agree to give up a little bit of our rights, in response the gov must protect, if they don’t we can overthrow, puritans set up the massachusetts bay colony
why they came
trade, gold, glory, god, jamestown-get rich quick, looking for gold, silver, india, cure for syphilis, and silk worms, john smith gets fired because he made the people work 4 hours a day - whattt how dare he
how they died
jamestown, dysentary, plymouth- winter, syphilis, warfare with the natives
contact and conflict
disease, food and technology - horses they can hunt the buffalo, religion, gender - women are the leaders in native american societies, notions of property - sharing everywhere
