divided into small nations, men dominated European life, bubonic plague, need for new trade markets, desire for african and asian goods

Who was Marco Polo?
famous western traveler, confident of kublai khan/worked with mongols/traveled the silk road, excelled in writing, influence, and determination, he introduced europe to asian goods
Who was amerigo vespcci?
Amerigo Vespucci - realized columbus was wrong - “new world”
Who was Bartolomeu Dias?
Bartolomeu Dias - first european to sail the cape of good hope (tip of south africa)
Who was Vasco Da Gama?
Vasco Da Gama - he accomplishes what columbus tried to do
Who was Ferdinand Magellan?
Ferdinand Magellan - portugese but sails for spain, sails all the way around the world, does not survive - 240 went and 18 came back
Who were the Conquistadors?
followed the explorers, under the king of spain, sail for spain their job was to conquer and kill
What were the rules of the conquistadors?
rule of 1/5 - 1/5 of whatevergold you get goes to the king
all the land you conquer is yours
when i encounter natives i will read the requirement - outlines christianity and demands them to agree to them if not you will be taken - document is in spanish
Who was Cortes?
first and most successful conquistador, landed in 1519, used natives against aztecs, went after tenochtitaln, the aztecs revolt and kick out cortes- he comes back and levels the city, montezuma does nothing because they think he is a gift from god, he sacrificed people in response
Pizarro and the Incas
poor, illiterate, and illegitament - no money, set out in 1531, goes with balboa, attacked the incas, he captures the emperor and bribes the people to get gold, kills the emperor and goes conquering for gold
what happened after the arrival of the explorers?
all empires were conquered, new settlements - st. augustine is the oldest, disease, slavery, 90% of native americans are dead, africa has a bunch of people - lets use them as slaves
slavery at this time
end of 15th century, started by portugese, trade copper etc to get people, load up ships and go across the middle passage, the africans think the slavers are cannibals, slave ships are small with death everywhere and a horrible survival rate
