Q

What is the rabbit or duck theory?

A

Some textualists fall victim to something like the duck-rabbit illusion. They genuinely see a duck; they insist that a duck is the only thing that reasonable people can see. Their perception is automatic, even though it might have been primed, or a product of preconceptions.

Q

What does the dress illusion mean?

A

Some people will see only what’s in front of them and others will be much more affected by the context. What is happening with the dress photo is that our eye is either discounting the blue from the photo so we are seeing white and gold, or discounting the gold which results in seeing a blue and black dress.

Q

What is bottom-up processing

A

Bottom-up processing is the process of ‘sensation’, whereby the input of sensory information from the external environment is received by our sensory receptors. Perception is how our brains choose, organize, and interpret these sensations.

Q

What is top down processing?

A

Top-down processing is perceiving the world around us by drawing from what we already know in order to interpret new information (Gregory, 1970). Top-down theories are hypotheses-driven, and stress the importance of higher mental processes such as expectations, beliefs, values and social influences.
