Pathophysiology of Coeliac disease
A
- Prolamins (gluten proteins, especially gliadin) induce autoimmune response
- Tissue transglutaminase modifies gliadin protein structure, enhancing its ability to induce inflammation
- Inflammation, mostly mediated by T lymphocytes, causes villous atrophy and consequent malabsorption
