Coastal erosion and deposition Flashcards
What is abrasion?
Waves transport materials and the pebbles grind along a rock platform gradually wearing it away
What is hydraulic action?
as waves approach the coast they trap air and force it into gaps in the cliff eventually thus weakens the rock
What is attrition?
Waves cause the rocks to crash against eachother breaking them down into smaller rounder pieces
What is corrosion?
salts and acids in seawater dissolve the rock gradually over thousands of years
What is solution?
when the water dissolves certain types of rock eg limestone
What is deposition?
when the sea looses energy, it drops the material it has been carrying. This is known as deposition
Factors leading to deposition
waves slow down and loose energy
shallow water
sheltered areas eg bays
little or no wind
