coal and petroleum Flashcards
what are inexhaustible and exhaustible natural resources?
inexhaustible- they are unlimited in number can not be finished by human activities. eg - sunlight and air
exhaustible- they are limited in number can be finished by human activities. eg- coal and petroleum
what are fossil fuels?
they are formed from the dead remains of plants and animals
what is carbonisation?
due to the natural processes like flooding, there forests got buried under the soil as more deposited they were compressed. under high pressure and temperature, dead plants and animals got slowly converted in coal and this is called carbonisation
uses of coal
- cooking
- steam engine
- thermal power
- various industries
what is coal tar, coal gas and coke
coke- tough, porous. used in manufacturing of steel and in the extraction of many metals.
coal tar - black, liquid. used for making perfumes, plastics, paints, roofing material and etc.
coal gas - it is processed when we change coal in to coal tar. it is used as fuel in many industries.
what is petroleum?
petrol and diesel are obtained from a natural resource called petroleum. derived from petra(rock) and oleum( oil). used in automobile and heavy vehicles.
process of making petroleum?
petroleum is formed from living organisms in sea. the dead bodies settled at bottom of the sea and got covered with layers of sand and clay. for millions of years, cause of high pressure, high temperature, absence of air transformed the dead organisms into petroleum and natural gas.
