CLPS 0020- Lectures - Language Continued Flashcards

1
Q

What does the “rumor has it” bugs experiment show?

A

That we access both meanings in the beginning of processing, but we continue to process only the meaning that makes sense in context

Q

What were the results of the “rumor has it” bugs experiment?

A

More priming for contextually related words when context has been established than for contextually unrelated words (hear ant vs spy vs sew after bug: same priming; three words laters: more priming for related)

Q

Why is there less activation for related stimuli (trapeze.circus) than for nonrelated (pollute/circus)?

A

takes more effort to search through the lexicon if there’s no priming: “trapeze” activates words in the lexicon, so the reaction time is faster

Q

What does it mean that words activate lexical networks?

A

A word primes related words, making it easier to identify if the second word is a word or not

Q

Do nonwords activate lexical networks? Will gat/wat/nose activate the cat lexical network?

A

Gat will the most, then wat, then nose: the further you get from cat, the less lexical activation there is

Q

What happens to priming when there is a competitor? Time vs t*ime vs dime?

A

Less priming: since time and dime are fighting for representation, it takes longer for the system to decide
