Manic episode A =
a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood and abnormally and persistent increased activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day (or any duration if hospitalization is necessary)
manic episoce b=
during the period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, at least 3 are present (4 if the mood is irritable):
- inflated self esteem or grandiosity
- decreased need for sleep
- more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking

- distractibility
- increase in goal-directed activity
- excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences
manic episode C=
the mood disturbance is sufficiently severe to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or to necessitate hospitalization to prevent harm to self or others, or there are psychotic features
hypomanic episode A=
a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased activity or energy, lasting at least 4 days and present most of the day, nearly everyday
hypomania B=
during the period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, at least 3 are present (4 if the mood is irritable):
- inflated self esteem or grandiosity
- decreased need for sleep
- more talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking
- flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing
- distractibility

- excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences
hypomanic episode C=
the episode is associated with an unequivocal change in functioning that is uncharacteristic of the individual when not symptomatic
it is not just a very good period, it is different than just feeling good, unusually active/responsive
hypomanic episode D=
the disturbance in mood and the change in functioning are observable by others
hypomanic episode E=
the episode is not severe enough to cause marked impairment in social or occupational functioning or to neccissitate hospitalization. If there are psychotic features, the episode is by definition manic!!
dus een hypomanic episode met psychotic features….
is per definitie dus niet hypomanisch, maar manisch
bipolar 1 syndrome A=
criteria have been met for at least one manic episode
(often there are also depressive episodes, but these are not necessary to diagnose)
bipolar 2 syndrome A=
criteria have been met for at least one hypomanic episode, and one major depressive episode
