Clinical Skills 3 - Oral cavity examination

Question 1

If patient has some problems with mouth, carry out oral cavity examintion

What is looked at when looking in the inner side of mouth?

Answer 1

Look at the buccal mucosa and the opening of the parotid duct

Also look at side of the tongue to exclude pathology

Question 2

What is looked for underneath the tongue?

Answer 2

Look a the submandibular ducts (sublingual papillae on either side of the frenulum) and sublingual folds

Question 3

Finally ask patinet to say ‘aah’ and what do you look at now?

Answer 3

Have a good look at tonsils and palate (palatal petechiae - glandular fever and strep sore throat)
