Clinical Kinesiology Flashcards
Define kinesiology
study of human movement
Define kinematics
motion/how a body moves
Define kinetics
the forces associated with the motion of bodies in a frame of reference
Directions of rotation
Flexion Extension Abduction Adduction Lateral flexion Internal rotation External rotation
Directions of linear motion
Compression Distraction Translation - anterior/posterior - medial/lateral - superior/inferior
What direction is roll and slide moving in a convex-on-concave
roll and slide are opposite
What direction is roll and slide moving in a concave-on-convex
roll and slide move in the same or similar direction
What is close-packed position
the position of max congruence b/w articular surfaces and frequently a joint’s end of ROM
What is loose (open)-packed position
any position that is not close-packed and relatively slack
Define force
it causes a change in motion and induces deformation of the body it’s acting on
Define property elasticity
if a load is exerted on an object then released the object will go back to its original position
Define concentric contraction
muscle shortening (dominant internal torque)
Define eccentric contraction
muscle lengthening (dominant external torque)
Define isometric contraction
no length change (torques cancel)
Define agonist
the primary muscle performing the action
Define antagonist
the muscle that contradicts the primary muscle action
Define stabilizer
a muscle that stabilizes the joint being displaced
Define synergist
a muscle that assists the primary muscle in performing the action
Define torque
rotational equivalent of force
What is the most common lever class in the musculoskeletal system
3rd class levers
Define mechanical disadvantage
muscle must produce greater relative forces
Benefit of a mechanical disadvantage
less contraction distance required to produce joint displacement
What is the relationship between load and velocity
higher the load the lower the velocity
