Classic Study :Baddeley A01 Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
To use the same procedures as his 1966b study to discover if there was a similar pattern of results for LTM.
What kind of experimental method did he use?
Laboratory experiment
What kind of experimental design did he use?
Independent Measures
How many conditions of the IV were there?
4
List A - Acoustically similar
List B - Acoustically dissimilar
List C - Semantically similar
List D - Semantically dissimilar
How many participants were there?
75
What kind of test was given to the participants before the procedure?
Hearing test
How long did the participants have to write down as many words from the list in the correct order as they could remember?
40 seconds
How many words were on each list?
10
How many times was the procedure carried out?
4
What did the participants do for 20 minutes after the initial procedure of recalling the words in the correct order?
An unrelated task
What was the dependent variable?
Number of words recalled in the correct order.
Which inferential test was used to analyse any significance difference?
Mann-Whitney U Test.
What was one finding in the learning trial (STM)?
Recall of acoustically similar words (list A) was lower than for the acoustically dissimilar words (list B).
What was a significant difference of the LTM trial?
There was significant LTM forgetting for both the semantically similar and dissimilar lists.
What did Baddeley conclude?
The procedure used in experiment 1 was not a true test of LTM (which was influenced by material stored in the STM) so he carried out 2 further experiments to clarify the semantic nature of LTM encoding.
