Class Notes: Self Affirmation (October 4th) Flashcards
What is a Deliberative Mindset?
· Predecisional
· Think about the expected values of potential action goals
· Not yet committed to the goal, thinking of the pros and cons of committing or not committing to the goal
What is a Implemental Mindset?
· After you make the decision, but its before you take action in the direction of the goal
· When where and how, will you achive that goal
· Goal awaits successful implemations
· Once you committed to the goal, the results and rewards are distraction. Same with reevaluating the decision.
Deliberates (type of people when making a choice).
Impartial information processing
Implemental (type of people when making a choice).
-Partial information processing
If normal peoples perceptions are marked by positive biases, how can they effectively identify and make use of negative feedback they may encounter in the world?
Can help with:
-Good decision making
-Deliberation
-Weigh pros and cons
-suspend illusions
-Goal striving process
-Implementation
-Task Oriented, focused
-Marshal Illusions
Mindsets and Illusion of Control
Deliberation: Immediate and long term consequences of making and not making decisions
Implementation: 5 steps for bringing about the project. List when, where, and how each step would be preformed.
Contingency learning task with lightbulb
Light will turn on 75% of the time when you press the button.
It will also turn on 75% of the time when you don’t press the button.
· People still feel like they still control the light with the button.
Note: “Mindset theory suggests that a deliberative mindset entails openness to information in one’s environment, whereas an implemental mindset entails filtering of information. We hypothesized that this open- versus closed-mindedness influences individuals’ breadth of visual attention.”
How does the deliberate vs implemental mindset influence your perception of self?
When it comes to self perceptions, deliberating about a goal decreases positive self views.
While implemental increases positive self views.
However: All groups rated themselves as above average. Even in deliberative self mindset, they rate themselves as higher then the average.
Relationship Illusions and the implemental mindset
When implemental mindset about a personal goal (not a relationship goal) = see partner more positively.
Are people more accurate in their assessments in a deliberate mindset?
Yes!
They looked at students in long distance relationships, CEGEP students applying to Uni, and the Gollwitzer manipulation of university students in dating relationships
-By putting a person in a state of deliberation, their expectations are more likely to change.
People don’t want to look at things in a realistic way, unless they were in a deliberate mindset. Even if the deliberate state is about something else.
Ex. Asked people how long they think their relationship will last.
-And people in a deliberative state will give a more accurate forecast.
Does the deliberative mindset just make you more pessimistic?
People in a deliberate mindset, only gave a bad rating on the time of the relationship were the ones who broke up
Ex. Deliberate mindset people in good relationships still gave good scores for their relationship.
So no, just makes you realistic!
Is dileberation a good mindset then?
Always falling into deliberation= always wondering and thinking and become paralyzed
What happens when you’re deliberating a relationship goal?
When deliberating about a relationship goal- this is like a threat to their relationship and or triggering insecurity in their relationship
· Defend-boost partner ratings.
· Also, if committed to the relationship and deliberate.
· SO if feel threatened- you get defensive and upsell your relationship to justify your choices
What is Compensatory relationship enhancement?
· Find out you and your partner have different values about making a pregnancy decision.
· They can find out if this relationship is a core part of their identity.
· Couple do a quiz on life decisions- The experimenter returned with a 47% similar result (not good) (47% is fabricated just to see how they’ll react to the score)
· They rate their relationship higher as a defence.
How do we Assimilate and contrast to self affirm?
· Assimilate: “I am a McGill student- not anyone can be here! So, I’ll do well.”
· Contrast: “___ could never get in here and do this”
