What is Emotion?
Brief, specific response involving appraisals, experiences, expressions and physiologically that help people meet their goals including social goals
What is appraisal?
Interpretation an individual gives to a situation that gives rise to the experience of the emotion
How do we tell emotions and moods apart?
Emotions= brief and specific (situational)
Mood= long and non specific
Why do we have emotions?
1) helps us interpret our surroundings “read the room”
2) guide our actions. Ex. Anger sparks protests and change
What are emotional expressions (freebie)
Both universal and culturally specific
What did Darwin hypothesize about universal expressions?
1) all people use same muscles so there should be similar interpretations of the expressions
2) since close evolutionary theory, primates should have similar expressions to humans
3) blind people show similar expressions to sighted people
What are focal emotions?
Emotion that is common within a culture
Ex. Interdependent cultures have more shame
Why do some emotions become focal? (Affect valuation theory)
Affect valuation theory: emotions promote cultural ideals
What is emotional regulation?
Altering emotions to fit the present context
Three emotional regulation strategies:
Rethink - cause of emotion
Accept - welcoming attitude to emotions
Suppression - minimize signs of emotion
What is Social functional theory ?
The broad idea that emotions coordinate social interactions in ways that enable people to meet social opportunities and challenges
“Commitment problem”
We must regularly sacrifice for others to increase affection
How does emotions help us in relationships?
1) expressions of emotions signals our commitment to others well-being
2) emotions lead us to prioritize others
Does oxytocin make us more loving?
Yes!
But can also increase prejudice, cuz we tend to show this love to only in groups. Can increase prejudice.
How do emotions help us find out places in groups?
Expressions of emotion can cause group members to trust, fear and dislike you
How does emotions influence perception and reasoning?
Perception, ex if grieving everything you see will kinda be a bummer about everything
Reasoning, positive mood = positive thinking
What is the Broaden and build hypothesis?
Positive emotions broaden thoughts and actions helping people build social resources
What are Cultural variances in happiness?
Different ideas in each culture on what leads to happiness
How to measure happiness?
Life satisfaction
And
Emotional well-being
What are the Happiest countries?
Strong safety net countries (Sweden, Norway and Finland )
What are the benefits of happiness?
1) enables better work
2) personal relationships
3) better health
What is Affective forecasting ?
We assume we’ll be sadder than we really are.
What is Immune neglect?
People underestimate their capacity to be resilient responding to life events. Which makes us overestimate how impacted our personal well being will be.
What is Focalism?
We tend to focus on a central aspect of an event and ignore other things that are going on that can change how we feel
What is Duration neglect ?
Unimportance of the length of an emotional experience if good or bad. When looking back on experiences we remember the quality time spent together as opposed to length of time together.
