How do signs make it harder to analyze relationships?
Signs are hard to read, are lack of any anniversary situations a cause of fighting or cuz both people don’t care.
What is the importance of relationships?
Can be evolutionary trait
And we seems to have a need to belong
What is a Communal relationship?
Long term relationship where individuals feel responsibility to each other (family/friends)
What is an exchange relationship?
Short term relationships, with little responsibility and want reciprocity. (Workers/bosses)
How does the social exchange theory affect interpersonal relationships?
People like and hang out with others who make them feel good
What is the social exchange theory?
How people feel about a relationship and cost benefit analysis
What is comparison level?
Expectations people have about what they should get from a relationship
What is a comparison level for alternatives?
Comparing alternative people and the expectations on what they can get from the relationship (ex. Many suitors)
What is the equity theory?
People persue fairness.
Cost benefit ratio is equal for both partners
Describe the Attachment styles (secure, avoidant, and anxious)
Secure: close to others and comfy
Avoidant: hard to be close and struggle trusting
Anxious-ambivalent: others don’t want to close and worry partner will leave
Anxiety: worried about rejection
Avoidance: degree to which someone is comfy with intimacy
Do attachment styles effect the quality of relationships?
Styles seem to trend through our whole lives.
Why? Self fulfilling prophecy
BUT
People adapt attachment styles in each relationship (not set in stone)
People do change over time to increase their relationship quality
What makes us like someone (attraction)
1) proximity
Functional distance- physical layout that encourages / inhibits activities
2) mere exposure effect- repeated exposure to a stimulus leads to a greater liking of it
What is a complementary relationship type?
The tendency for people to seek others who’s characteristics that are different from them, and complement them
What are the benefits of physical attractiveness?
More wanted romantically and as a friend
Favoured at work
And let them off in court
What is the halo effect?
Attractive people have a ton of other positive qualities
What is the Role of gender on attractiveness?
Attractiveness is more important for women
Is there a universality of physical attractiveness?
There is variations across all subcultures
Reproductive fitness
You know this, and how it relates to attractiveness
Three types of relationships?
Companionate love: friends and family
Compassionate love: looking out for needs
Passionate love: romantic
What are the three determinants that make partners more committed?
1) relationship satisfaction
2) less other partners
3) investments in relationships
What is Perceived partner responsiveness?
Degree to which people perceive their partners to be understanding, validating and responsive to needs
What are the predictors of dissatisfaction in relationships?
1) personality (ex. Neurotic people and low self esteem)
2) SES= financial difficulties can causes breakup
3) Age: younger people tend to divorce more
Four most harmful behaviours in relationships?
1) criticism
2) stonewalling (avoidance)
3) defensiveness
4) contempt- one looking down on another, these harm relationships and mental health
What are dangerous attributions?
Dissatisfied couples make attributions that show their partner negatively.
Ex. One brings flowers=

How to create stronger romantic bonds?
1) capitalizing on the good - sharing good news
2) being playful
3) finding the good in partners - idealization is important
Do arranged marriages have the same issues that romantic love has?
