what does bernstein talk about?
speech codes. middle class talking in a elaborate code disadvantages those of a working class.

recognises school and not how home factors influence them. says that w/c students fail bc schools dont teach them how to use elaborate code.
what does douglas talk about?
w/c parents place less value on education, dont motivate the students which results in them not attending parents evening.
what does sugarmann talk about?
4 factors that act as a barrier to educational achievement. fatalism, collectivism, immediate gratification and present time orientation.

how does housing affect students?
- overcrowding which means that theres no space for them to study. disturbance in sleep
- temp accomadation which means they have to keep moving which lead to them being sick.
-greater risks of absences due to accidents
diet and health
low intakes of vitamins and nutrients which leads to a weaker immune system which leads to more absences and then missing school work.

the idea that m/c have more of a advantage and are better equipped. parents convert cultural capital into economic and send their kids to private schools
