compassion, competence, confidence, conscience, commitment, comportment,
compassion
sensitive to pain and brokenness in others. we all have it. a quality of presence that allows one to share with and make room for the other
competence
ask good questions, knowledge, judgement, skills, energy, experience and motivation required to respond adequately to demands of professional responsibilities
confidence
self belief about your ability tp help others, sense of security and trust.
conscience
morals, ethics, self awareness, grows with experience.
commitment
loyal, committed to providing good care. convergence between desires and obligations and by the deliberate choice to act in accordance with them
comportment
how you present yourself, look and act. use of dress, language and personal bearing to communicate care and respect for the dignity of both the patient and the nurse
caring process
C: connect with client
A: appreciate the clients situation
R: resend to clients needs
E: empower the client to problem-solve collaboratively
empathy
is grounded in the acknowledgement of death and the celebration of life and rooting for each other to flourish and be. it is based on our frailties and imperfections
- the ability to understand the ideas and feelings of another person
- requires you to place yourself within the clients frame of reference. WITHOUT losing your identity or objectivity
- involves accepting the clients feelings and experiences as real for them
when to listen with empathy
- to begin a relationship of trust and caring
- when you don’t understand what a person is saying or what they mean
- to learn more about a person
- when your ideas and the other persons ideas are different
sympathy
feeling sorry for another situation
empathy
having a sense of what another persons situation is like. need to actively listen and respond with understanding in order to express empathy
what we are here for as nurses with empathy
- to listen… not to work miracles
- to help people discover what they are feelings… not to make feelings go away
- to help people identify their options.. not to decide for them what to do
- to help people discover their own strengths… not to rescue them and leave them still vulnerable
when should you not show empathy….
if patient is depressed, suicidal or intoxicated
