what is a family
a family is who it says it is, and includes who it says it does

2 or more individuals that have common goals. membership in groups is inevitable and interchangeable
primary group
lifelong, and has influence on self identity, attitudes and behaviour
secondary group
less personalized and time limited. often goal oriented with the group separating after goal is completed
group purpose
provides the explanation for why it has formed
gives direction to how it will complete task
influences the goals and decisions of the group
group roles
may be assigned or assumed based on the responses of others
examples: leader, helper, follower, recorder
stages in group development
forming - becoming a group, getting to know one another. needing input from a leader/figure out goal
storming - growing and producing (heated discussions) conflict with productive outcomes
norming- cohesion and cooperation. come to an agreement. individual goals become group goals
performing - problem solving, developing new behaviours
successful teams
- defines roles and responsibilities
- focus on communication
- pay attention to warning signs of poor dynamics
- tackle problems quickly with good feedback
poor group dynamics
weak leadership
- free riding (not contributing)
- non functional roles
- group think (going along with something even if you disagree with the rest of the group)
