circulatory system Flashcards
function
- transport nutrients, oxygen, wastes and hormones within blood throughout the body
- the heart is central to pumping blood throughout the body through blood vessels called arteries, veins and capillaries
types of blood vessels
arteries and veins
arteries
blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
veins
blood vessels that bring blood back to the heart
arteries characteristics
thick walls, high pressure, elastic (stretches, returns to original shape), lots of muscle in walls, no valves
veins characteristics
thin walls, low pressure, inelastic (stiff), less muscle in walls, contains valves to prevent backflow of blood
capillaries
smallest blood vessels; only one cell thick in order to allow diffusion of substances between blood and body tissue (involved with gas exchange)
red blood cells
carry oxygen using hemoglobin
white blood cells
body immunity, fights invaders
platelets
blood clotting
plasma (55%)
carries some dissolved gases, proteins and other blood components
function of the heart
pumps blood
right side - pumps oxygen-poor blood to lungs to pick up oxygen
les side - pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body
location of the heart
- chest cavity
- in between the lungs
- located slightly to the left
