Q

how is each specialized type of cell suited for the task it must do?

A

Each special kind of cell is suited to work by its shape, size and internal structure. When all the cells of the body coorporate by doing their jobs, the body is in good health.

Q

How are cheek cells specialized to make the lining of the cheek smooth, flexible and strong?

A

The cheek lining cells are thin and flat. They fit together like tiles on a floor, except they overlap slightly. There are several layers of these cells. These characteristics are what makes the lining of the cheek smooth, flexible and strong.

Q

What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscle?

A

voluntary:
found in arm and leg muscles
contain many fibers which can shorten and pull with great force
any movements of your body, such as walking and jumping, are caused by the contraction, or shortening, of these cells
called voluntary muscle cells because they act when we wish them to
striated

involuntary:
shorter
located in many parts of our body (e.g. the walls of the swallowing tube, stomach and intestines have layers of the muscles which help us swallow and digest food we eat)
called involuntary muscle because their contractions are automatic and they work without having to think about then
they are not striated, they are referred to as “smooth” muscles

Q

Why do nerve cells have long branches projecting outward?

A

the ends of each branch make contact with other cells. Nerve cells are shaped like long wires so they can carry messages from one end of your body to the other.
