how many aviation personnel classifications are there?
Class 1: personnel, under age of 50, in actual control of aircraft.
Class 2: personnel not primarily designated to be in actual control of aircraft.
aviation physical examination
- type of duty to be performed, within 24 months, preceding active duty & active duty for training.
- CG form 6020(medical recommendation for flying duty)
any coast guard member involved in a Class ____ or _____ aircraft mishap in which damage to the aircraft or injury to any crewmember occurs SHALL undergo a complete aviation physical examination(CG form 6020) as part of the mishap investigation.
Class A or B
(AVIATION MEDICINE) types of waivers
- Temporary
- Permanent
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Temporary waiver
- physical defect or condition has not stabilize and may either progressively increase of decrease in severity.
- specific period of time - re-evaluation prior to being extended
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Permanent waiver
- defect or condition is not normally subject to change or progressively deteriorate
- does not impair the individual’s ability to perform general duty, or the requirements of a particular specialty, grade, or rate.
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Alcohol use
restrictions:
- no aerial flight for 12 hours after last alcohol use
- must have no residual effects
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Tobacco use
use of any tobacco products is prohibited during the performance of flight duties and aboard any military aircraft.
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Vision
any aviation personnel are required to have at least 20/20 vision while performing flight duties
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Blood donations
- permission from the Commanding Officer
- shall not donate more often than every 120 days
- grounding period:
1. 200 cc or more of blood = 3 days
2. 500 cc or more of blood = 7 days
**standard unit of blood is less than 500 cc**
personnel should not be permitted to engage in the following flights for a period of 7 days after blood donations.
- flights above 35,000 ft.
- night flying
- demanding flights

- grounded for a minimum of 7 days
- must have a satisfactory medical examination by Flight Surgeon(FS)
aviation personnel will not fly or perform low-pressure chamber “runs” within 24 hours following…
- SCUBA diving
- compressed air dives
- hyperbolic chamber dives
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Pregnancy
- no member will perform duties as a rescue swimmer upon confirmation of pregnancy.
- no pregnant member shall perform duties involving flying AFTER THE END OF THE SECOND TRIMESTER nor shall a pregnant member undergo physiologic training.
(AVIATION MEDICINE) Medication classes
Class 1: over-the-counter medications used without waiver.
Class 2: prescription used for short or long term under supervision of FS without a waiver. (TQ: 24 hour grounding period)
Class 3: prescription used for long term that may receive favorable waiver for treatment of a certain chronic condition(s)
Class 4: medications for chronic disease(CD), necessitate grounding aviation personnel and is not waiverable for flying duty
