A

The 5 basic clusters of personality traits that remain quite stable throughout the adulthood:

O: Openness- imaginative, curious, artistic, creative.

C: Conscientiousness- organized, self-disciplined conforming.

E: Extroversion- Outgoing, assertive, active.

A: Agreeableness- Kind, Helpful, Easygoing, Generous

N: Neuroticism- Anxious, moody, self-punishing, critical

Intimacy: Connecting With Others

A
  • Living Apart Together (LAT): The term for couples who are committed to each other and spend time together, but maintain separate homes. LAT couples are increasingly common in the US and Europe.
  • Empty Nest: The time in the lives of parents when their children have left the family home. This is often a happy time for everyone.

  • Social Convoy: Collectively, the family members, friends, and acquaintances, and even strangers who move through the years of life with a person.
  • Fictive Kin: People who become accepted as part of a family in which they are not genetically or legally members.

  • Kinkeeper- Someone who becomes the gatherer and communications hub for the family (such as anniversaries, illnesses, relocations, etc)
  • Sandwich Generations- The generation of middle-aged people who are supposedly “squeezed” by the needs of the younger and older members of their family.

Generativity: The Work of Adulthood (employment)

A
  • Extrinsic Rewards of Work- The tangible benefits, usually in salary, insurance, pension, and status, that come with employment.
  • Intrinsic Rewards of Work- The personal gratifications, such as pleasure in a job well done or friendships with coworkers, that accompany employment.

(Generativity is Intrinsic)

  • Psychological Context- The implicit understanding of the relationship between employer and employee that includes procedures to resolve conflict and expectations for the interaction between supervisors and workers.
