pharm class: dyslipidemia
works in the liver
decreases LDL cholesterol
prevents ischemic strokes
decreases plaque formation
can cause myopathy, rhabdomyolysis
don’t take if pregnant
don’t take with grapefruit juice

Cholestyramine (Questran)
Colesevelam (Welchol)

A

pharm class: bile acid sequestrants
decreases LDL in cholesterol cannot be digested or absorbed
prevents bile acids in the gut preventing their reabsorption
Give in powder suspended in H20 or juice or tablets
when giving other medications take other medications 1 hour before or 4 hours after Colesevelam

MOA: inhibits cholesterol absorption in the gut
both in diet and in the bile
AE: myopathy

Vitamin B (niacin)

pharm class: Lipid-lowering agent
MOA: decreases hepatic VLDL production which then lowers the LDLs
AE: intense flushing in all patients
Gi upset: N, V,D increase in uric acid and glucose levels

pharm class: lipid-lowering agent
MOA: increases the synthesis of lipoprotein lipase and increases the clearance of VLDLS
DI: don’t take warfarin it displaces warfarin from albumin
