what is attachment
- emotional tie between a child and their primary care giver
- influenced by parenting style and environment in which child grows up in
- implications in later life (can influence how future relationships are formed)
what does secure attachment suggest
balanced and attuned parenting style
what does anxious avoidant attachment suggest
avoidant or unresponsive parenting style
what does anxious ambivalent attachment suggest
unpredictable or scary parenting style
what does disorganised attachment suggest
significant trauma or chaos
what is temperament
inherent, constitutionally based characteristics that make up the core of a person’s personality
diagnostic triad of ADHD
- hyperactivity
- impulsivity
- inattention
what is needed for diagnosis of ADHD
symptoms need to be developmentally inappropriate, present for at least 6 months and be present in multiple settings
non-pharmacological management of ADHD
- parent training
- social skills training
- classroom strategies (sit at front of class)
- sleep and diet changes (melatonin can be used to improve sleep cycle)
- encourage normal healthy balanced diet
pharmacological management for ADHD
- 1st line: methylphenidate
- 2nd line: atomoxetine
- 3rd line: anti-depressants, anti-psychotics
what is autism spectum disorder
umbrella term used to describe all types and severity of autistic symptoms

- find relations difficult to establish
- show little interest in others and little awareness of their feelings

- rigid and concrete in their thinking
- lack imagination and struggle to understand what others are thinking or their point of view
- very routine oriented and struggle to cope with change from this routine
- restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviour such as spinning or rubbing head
- become interested and fixated on one task or hobby

- struggle to make eye contact
- struggle with abstract or non-verbal communication
- struggle to initiate and sustain conversation
- stress, pitch or rhythm of speech may be odd
