Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980 (AACWA) Goal and Stipulation
- Goal to decrease # of children in foster care
- Caused confusion in its requirement for states to make “reasonable efforts” to reunite children w/ bio families (states thought it meant kids had to be returned)
Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA) 1997
Attempted to resolve confusion from AACWA, delineating factors for terminating parental rights when reason efforts to avoid have failed
Use of Anatomical Dolls (3)
- Use w/ very young children (=< 3) not be shown to be helpful
- Although sexually abused children generally show more sexualized behavior, not all demonstrate
- Although children who haven’t been abused generally don’t show suspicious sexualized play, some do
