why is it called the breakthrough disease
20% of children will get the disease even if theyre vaccinated
clinical presentation
prodrome - fever, malaise
1 day later get very itchy rash with red spots
become blisters
crust, falls off after 1-2 weeks, no longer infectious
complication
skin infection from strep
reyes syndrome
encephalitis
reactivation of latent virus - shingles
non pharms
wash hands
keep children at home until crust forms
avoid scratching
cut nails
pharms
non
immunocompromised may need antiviral
diphenhydramine for itch
vaccines available for
varicella
pertussis
