sucking chest wound
open wound to the chest/ back
bubbles or makes a sucking noise
apply a non occlusive dressing
Pneumothorax
air from a wound site enters the chest cavity
pressure presses against lung causing it to collapse
spontaneous pneumothorax
lung collapses bc the pt has a weak area on the lungs
common in smokers and emphysema pt.
Hemothorax
the pleural space fills with blood
puts pressure on heart and lungs
lungs cannot expand
tension Pneumothorax
air leaks out the lung and becomes trapped in pleural space
air starts affecting the side and reduces it to a small ball.
prevents blood for circulating
flail chest
fractures in chest break apart.
segment of broken rib become free floating
causing paradoxal breathing
segment can puncture lung

signs and symptoms
- shortness of breath
- paradoxal breathing
- swelling over the area
- shock
- increased airway resistance
– grating sounds
broken ribs
- grating sounds
chest deformity - shallow, irregular breathing
- crackling sensation
- bruising / lacerations
- frothy blood at nose/mouth
